When to speak with a professional
Talk with a doctor, pharmacist or appropriately qualified nutrition professional before using a supplement if you take prescription or over-the-counter medicine, have a health condition, are pregnant or breastfeeding, are planning surgery, or are choosing a product for a child. Stimulants, anticoagulant effects and concentrated botanical extracts deserve particular care because interactions may not be obvious from the front label.

What FDA oversight means
Dietary supplements are regulated differently from drugs in the United States. FDA explains that it does not approve dietary supplements for safety and effectiveness before they are marketed in the way it approves new drugs. Companies remain responsible for lawful manufacturing, labelling and claims, and FDA can take action against unsafe or misbranded products. Read the FDA’s dietary supplement questions and answers.
